Testing & Inspection

Advanced Inspection & NDT Techniques

ALMADAR INDUSTRIAL, MIT, with the support of local and International partners can provide and perform inspection and non-destructive testing using the advanced Inspection and NDT Techniques.

These techniques will help the industries in checking equipment and piping for any defects and/or deterioration prior to reaching a failure state where un-expected plant or equipment shutdown occurs. These advance techniques will minimize the shutdown of the equipment and any piping systems because the check can be done while the equipment and the piping system is in service, it does not require any shutdowns and/or any internal inspection.

Some of these techniques are as follows:

  • Guided Wave Testing.
  • Phased Array Testing.
  • In-service Storage Tank Inspection.
  • Pipe Crawler Inspection.
  • Tofd

Guided Wave Testing Techniques

Used to check the followings:

  • Insulated piping without removal of insulation
  • Under-ground piping without excavating all.
  • For Corrosion under insulation (CUI).

NDT - Guided Wave Inspection - Long Range Ultrasonic Testing

Are you sure about the condition of your piping? What about the buried sections or the insulated parts? It is not easy to asses their condition in an effective way. The piping may be located many meters above the ground where they cross roadways or other pipe racks and what do you know after some local spot measurements? As process piping is a vital element of your facilities good understanding of their reliability is preventing unexpected shutdowns or delays during maintenance periods.

The Solution

Guided Wave technology, also known as Long Range Ultrasonic Testing, is a relatively new inspection technology with very big advantages above any other spot measurement. The Guided Wave technology screens 100% of the volume of the piping inspected for metal loss features such as corrosion and erosion. The piping can be in operation, insulated and even be buried Guided Wave technology will supply more data than we ever had to found decisions on further inspection and even replacement.

Metal loss detection in pipeline and process piping

The Guided Wave technology uses a low frequency guided ultrasound waves traveling along the pipe, providing 100% coverage of the pipe length. In normal application, tens of meters of piping may be inspected from a single location. Effected areas are precisely located in terms of distance from the transducer ring and highlighted for further local examination by visual or other conventional NDT methods. This non-destructive screening technique can be used without extensive scaffolding and minimizes the requirement of removing insulation along the piping

With Guided Wave you lift your inspection plan to a much more effective level then ever before. Guided Wave technology has the following fields of application:

  • Diameters 2“ to 42“
  • Temperatures from -40 to 120ºC.
  • Testing of elevated or complex piping from convenient locations.
  • Road crossings and buried pipelines.
  • Detection of corrosion/erosion under insulation.
  • Offshore process piping/riser inspection.
  • Chemical plant,, Power generation plant.
  • Refinery piping.

Phased Array Testing

Phased Array

Ultrasonic phased array testing is a powerful NDT technology and one whose use is growing rapidly, however it can seem complex to a person who has not worked with it.

What is a Phased Array?

An array transducer is simply one that contains a number of separate elements in a single housing, and phasing refers to how those elements are sequentially pulsed. A phased array system is normally based around a specialized ultrasonic transducer that contains many individual elements (typically from 16 to 256) that can be pulsed separately in a programmed pattern. These transducers may be used with various types of wedges, in a contact mode, or in immersion testing. Their shape may be square, rectangular, or round, and test frequencies are most commonly in the range from 1 to 10 MHz. You will find much more information about phased array probes in the following sections of this tutorial.

What do they do?

Phased array systems pulse and receive from multiple elements of an array. These elements are pulsed in such a way as to cause multiple beam components to combine with each other and form a single wave front traveling in the desired direction. Similarly, the receiver function combines the input from multiple elements into a single presentation. Because phasing technology permits electronic beam shaping and steering, it is possible to generate a vast number of different ultrasonic beam profiles from a single probe assembly, and this beam steering can be dynamically programmed to create electronic scans.

This enables the following capabilities:

  1. Software control of beam angle, focal distance, and beam spot size. These parameters can be dynamically scanned at each inspection point to optimize incident angle and signal-to-noise for each part geometry.
  2. Multiple-angle inspection can be performed with a single, small, multi-element probe and wedge, offering either single fixed angles or a scan through a range of angles.
  3. These capabilities provide greater flexibility for inspection of complex geometries and tests in which part geometry limits access.
  4. Multiplexing across many elements allows motionless high-speed scans from a single transducer position. More than one scan may be performed from a single location with various inspection angles.
